Benefiting JFK Brain Tumor Center
Flo’s Annual Chili Cook-Off benefiting the Brain Tumor Center at the JFK Neuroscience Institute (Edison, NJ), will be held Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey. This important benefit is to honor our loving friend, sister, mother and aunt, Flo Tempalski.
Flo was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, a grade IV brain tumor on October 31, 2006 and passed on October 7, 2007. Flo was 51 years of age with two children and three grandchildren. She was a loving part of our life, our sister and my life long friend.
Roughly 210,000 people in the United States each year are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor – of these, approximately 45,000 are diagnosed with primary brain tumors, while 170,000 individuals are diagnosed with metastatic brain tumors -- there is still no cure. No two brain tumors are alike, making effective treatment very complicated. Prognosis, or expected outcome is dependent on several factors including the type of tumor, location, response to treatment, an individual's age, and overall health status. An estimated 35% of adults living with a primary malignant brain or central nervous system tumor will live five years or longer. Over 7% of all reported primary brain tumors in the United States are among children under the age of 20.
This year we are raising funds to benefit the Brain Tumor Center in Edison NJ -- a comprehensive program for the diagnosis and management of brain and spinal cord tumors situated at a single site in New Jersey. The JFK Brain Tumor Center focuses not only on survival but also on the quality of the patient’s life during and after treatment. In addition, the program incorporates other disciplines, such as hematology/oncology, neuroophthalmologic otoneurology, physical rehabilitation medicine, adult and pediatric critical care specialists and support services.
Last year Flo’s Chili Cook-Off raised over $8,000 in one day. This year our goal is to raise $15,000 to benefit the Brain Tumor Center’s programs and services for patients and families in New Jersey. The day-long event includes live entertainment, the KIDZ ZONE, arts and crafts fair, eco–friendly products, local produce, Chinese auction and some of the best chili you will ever find in New Jersey! Doors open at 11am, live music starts at 11:30am, and chili sampling begins at noon. The excitement and fun will continue throughout the day until 5pm, and be sure to attend the Chili Awards Ceremony at 4:30pm.
